Dance Freely, Dream Boldly

Community dance classes for all ages and abilities

Our Mission

Founded in 2013 in Everett, Washington, Baile Folklórico Colibrí is a nonprofit dance group dedicated to celebrating and preserving the beauty of Mexican culture. From our youngest dancers—just three years old—to adults, our members perform at events across Washington State, sharing the color, rhythm, and spirit of Mexico.

Our mission is to empower youth through cultural pride and artistic expression. By embracing their roots, students build confidence, identity, and belonging—strengthening the connection between generations and the community.

Our Classes

Bumblebee (Introductory Toddler / Early Youth, ages 3–6)

Our Bumblebee class is the perfect first step into folklórico for our youngest dancers. Designed especially for toddlers and early youth (ages 3–6), this class uses playful games, gentle movement, and simple rhythm exercises to build coordination, balance, and musical awareness. Dancers explore basic zapateado (footwork) in a fun, supportive environment, while also learning introductory arm and skirt movements. Through storytelling and culturally rich music, Bumblebees begin to connect with Mexican heritage while developing social skills, confidence, and a love of dance.

Ruby (Beginning Level)

Ruby is our beginning-level class for youth who are ready to dive deeper into folklórico. Ideal for ages roughly 7–12 (or as determined by ability), this class introduces foundational folklórico techniques: basic footwork (zapateado), simple skirt/arm work (faldeo and braceo), and musicality (counting beats, responding to rhythm). Ruby dancers begin learning short across-the-floor combinations, build body awareness, and gain confidence performing in a structured yet welcoming setting. Cultural education is woven in, helping students understand the stories behind the dance steps. This early training builds a strong technical and creative base for future levels.

Esmeralda (Intermediate Level)

Our Esmeralda class is tailored for youth and teens who have mastered the beginning fundamentals and are ready to deepen their folklórico practice. At this intermediate level, dancers refine their footwork with more complex zapateado patterns, strengthen their skirt and arm work, and improve musical sophistication (syncopation, phrasing, compás). We also emphasize ensemble skills: dancers work on formations, spatial awareness, and stage presence. Along with choreography, Esmeralda students explore regional dance styles and historical context, gaining a richer appreciation of Mexican traditions as they grow technically and artistically.

Violeta (Advanced)

Violeta is our advanced class for teens and adults who are serious about folklórico performance and technique. Here, dancers tackle high-level footwork (fast zapateado, accented steps), sophisticated skirt work (multiple-turn routines, mariposa, caminos), and expressive arm movements. We also introduce partnering, complex formations, and extended choreographies, demanding musical precision, stamina, and projection. Cultural depth is enhanced through deep dives into regional styles, dance history, and performance storytelling. Violeta dancers are stage-ready, building confidence and artistry while preparing for recitals, community events, or company-level performance.

Danza Azteca (Indigenous Mexican Dance, All Ages)

Danza Azteca offers a vibrant and inclusive space to explore Indigenous Mexican dance and music traditions. Open to dancers and musicians of all ages and experience levels, this class focuses on the rich heritage, ceremonial significance, and spiritual roots of Aztec-style movement. Students learn traditional footwork, sacred rhythms, regalia protocols, and musical accompaniment (drums, flutes). Beyond technique, Danza Azteca provides a cultural education grounded in respect, community, and connection to ancestors. Whether you’re just beginning or returning with experience, this class is a place to honor Indigenous traditions through movement, ritual, and shared purpose.
